ESHA holds two major events each year: a three-day retreat in the fall and a dinner in conjunction with the annual NAIS conference in the winter.
Other activities include regular member conference calls - "Connecting Flights" - and occasional regional meetings of independent elementary/middle school heads.
What are "Connecting Flight" Calls? The monthly Flights are an intentional way of giving ESHA members an opportunity to air ideas and consider situations in a safe, knowledgeable and collegial environment. These calls affirm and strengthen leadership as participants gain insight, awareness and validation from exchanging experiences with their colleagues about successes and dilemmas. Meeting monthly, if possible, has the added benefit of developing enduring professional and personal relationships over the course of a school year. During the hour phone discussions, flight leaders listen carefully and guide the conversation, enabling ideas to be exchanged in ways that produce insights, affirmations and “takeaways” for the participants. Each flight normally consists of five or six Heads of varying experience. Contact Executive Director Chris Abell if you'd like to take off on a flight!
ESHA’s 2019 Annual Retreat
ESHA's Annual Retreat will be in Nashville, Tennessee, from October 19-22, 2019.
Things to know:
Venue: The Hermitage Hotel
Program: We're in Nashville, so come early, put yourself to work, and learn how to write a song with Grammy nominated singer Jamie Floyd. Then go to the Country Music Hall of Fame for dinner on Saturday.
On Sunday, hear from Ketch Secor, lead singer of the Old Crow Medicine Show. Among other things, he knows how to put a band together and how to put a school together (he's co-founder of The Episcopal School of Nashville).
Monday we'll go to Vanderbilt University's Peabody School to hone our skills under the guidance of Patrick Schuermann, director of their Independent School Leadership Program.
Tuesday's finale will include visits to a couple of Nashville's varied ESHA schools.

About Our Annual Retreats
Focus ESHA holds a retreat each fall, planned by and for heads of independent elementary and middle schools. Speakers on topics of professional interest, opportunities for discussion and socializing with colleagues, and relaxation are all part of the program.
Calendar Typically, the retreat takes place in mid-October, on a Sunday through Tuesday with pre-retreat activities on Saturday.
Participants The retreat experience is the one ESHA activity limited to members and their spouses/partners, thereby offering time focused entirely on those roles in school leadership.
Sponsors ESHA is grateful for sponsor support for its retreats and is happy to highlight these partner organizations. For more information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
About Our Annual Dinners
Focus ESHA holds a dinner each year in conjunction with the National Association of Independent Schools conference. Usually hosted at an ESHA member's school, the dinner features colleague time, a festive shared meal, and often a school tour and a student performance.
Calendar In recent years, the dinner has been held on the Wednesday of NAIS Conference week.
The 2019 event, a cocktail reception near NAIS headquarters, will take place on Wednesday, February 27. Registration will open in December.
Participants One need not be registered for the NAIS dinner or a member of NAIS to attend. ESHA members, prospective members, and spouses/partners are welcome.
